Green practices at ANRO include using paper from responsible, renewable sources, vegetable based inks, and water based coatings. Recycling, waste minimization, energy conservation and employee awareness programs, and leveraging environmentally friendly technologies are also part of our effort to tread lightly on our planet.
Sustainability
As an FSC certified commercial printer, ANRO can provide you (and your customers) with absolute assurance that the printed piece bearing your organization’s name did not originate from a threatened ecosystem, nor contribute to the destruction of habitats, displacement of indigenous people, or violence to people or wildlife.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international nonprofit organization devoted to the responsible management of the world’s forests through conservation efforts and certification programs. Chain-of-custody verification is required for each pair of hands in the path from forest to finished printed product, including all stages of processing, manufacturing and distribution. The paper itself and each organization along this path must be FSC certified to guarantee the finished product is traceable to trees that were responsibly grown and harvested.
ANRO’s certification permits our clients to specify FSC certified papers and use both the Forest Stewardship Council and Rainforest Alliance logos in their own marketing promotions and print collateral produced on those papers. There are a number of different FSC certified papers available to ANRO customers in a variety of types, grades and weights to meet the needs of virtually any print project. FSC certification is one of many examples of ANRO’s long-standing commitment to ecologically responsible practices.

Our Favorite Color is Green
The inks and coatings used by ANRO are environmentally friendly. All of our 4-color offset process inks and varnishes are vegetable based, made with linseed oil, and have a VOC content of less than 2%. Soy inks are also available in our offset pressroom.
Aqueous (water-based) coatings are our preferred coating for offset printing and have been an ANRO standard for almost a decade. These aqueous offset coatings are available in a range of gloss and matte finishes.
The ink used in ANRO’s HP Indigo digital presses is one of the most efficient supplies available in the digital press market. HP Indigo presses use liquid inks which are applied in layers that are thinner than what is possible using dry toners. These thin layers not only give HP Indigo presses a level of true offset quality that is unmatched by other technologies, but the volume of ink used is less than the amount of dry toner that would be used to create the same image. These inks comply with California’s Proposition 65, and do not contain any hazardous air pollutants established by the US Federal Clean Air Act.
Walking the Walk
ANRO recycles more than 93% of our total waste stream. This equated to 1,273 tons of paper and 10 tons of aluminum last year. In existence for more than two decades, ANRO’s recycling program has grown to include production and office consumables, paper, inks, aluminum printing plates, cardboard, solvents, cans and other metal products, toner cartridges, plastics and glass.
We’re also proud of the 100% employee participation in our recycling program, which is supported by both corporate policy and example. ANRO’s recycling program begins at orientation and extends beyond the company’s walls as employees are encouraged to bring in recyclables that are not being collected at their curbs. ANRO is also committed to buying recycled and has altered corporate purchasing polices to require recycled content in purchased products whenever possible.
ANRO’s waste minimization efforts include strategies to reduce waste at the source as well. Digital prepress and computer-to-plate innovations eliminated entire categories of consumables. Automatic on-press and equipment parts washing systems assist by first minimizing the amount required, then reclaiming and reusing necessary solvents. Even shop rags (a not so insignificant item in most pressrooms) are laundered and reused.

A Smaller Footprint

We will continue to pursue the most environmentally sound operating practices and procedures possible to protect the global environment on which we all depend, while continuing to provide you with the highest quality products and services.
ANRO’s new headquarters in West Chester are benifiting from improvements in energy efficiency as well. New roofing boosting the facility’s insulation rating from R17 to R27, robust new air filtration systems, and the pursuit of alternative energy sources are a few examples.
Pressroom chemistry has been modified to eliminate the use of isopropyl alcohol and other chemicals with high VOC contents or hazardous ratings. Florescent lighting has replaced inefficient incandescent bulbs. Energy efficiency is an essential criterion in all decisions regarding equipment purchases, maintenance programs and facilities decisions.
